Fun Autumnal activities at Fort View!

Our Bouncies at Fortview have been completing lots of different autumnal activities! They have gone on walks, made bird feeders, done some vegetable printing, created a lovely harvest shop and made their very own vegetable soup which they have thoroughly enjoyed playing with. We have provided lots of different learning experiences for the children to really help them understand what Autumn is. We learned how the history of Autumn began with the time of harvest for people who ...worked and depended on farming to survive. Did you know that Autumn was even called "harvest" in the 1500s because this was when fruits and vegetables were ready to be picked and stored for the winter? This is why our Bouncies created the ‘Harvest’ Vegetable shop and have done lots of activities with the children exploring these different vegetables.

Our preschool children have also been busy. Yesterday they completed a little science experiment ‘chemistry chaos’! We looked at the different harvest vegetables that the children had cut up and put into tubs of water. Then we placed cotton fabric sheets into this water which we left overnight. Today the children will remove the fabric to see how the different vegetables have stained the fabric. They will then use the vegetable dye to paint with.

Preschool have learnt that fruit and vegetables are coloured due to chemicals called polyphenols. Polyphenols attach to the fabric and dye it. They are the same chemicals that stain your clothes if you spill your food! We wanted to show how ‘harvest’ vegetables can also be used for other purposes which in older times this was how people coloured clothing and is still practiced in many parts of the world today.

Wow! What a busy few days!
