Where children have fun, learning

An interview with Sally at Barewell Road

Sally is a level 3 practitioner at our Barewell Road site, she gives us an example of how she creates inspiring activities to support early literacy at the setting

"I was researching some best practice from an early years consultant on the website www.abc.does.co.uk, there were some fabulous ideas! To start with I decided to do the blocks and paper activity with the children, we found this really effective because the children found it more exciting and fun writing on the blocks than on normal paper, they even helped wrap the blocks. Our children sat on the floor around the activity really focused and super excited to start, they were much more focused and able to use the pencil grip with various media to make marks on the blocks. The children used the name tags to copy letters onto their blocks, their names were very clear to see, the children showed high levels of focus, attention and fascination in the activity – the children all wanted to repeat the activity- it was a great new direction to take mark making.”
