Where children have fun, learning

Exploring the High Street

Downend Pre-school have been developing their knowledge and understanding of the world by going out into their local community to discover different occupations, shops, money and people. The children walked to Staple Hill high street where they found lots of different shops with lots of people walking, working and shopping. Pre-school discussed the types of shops they saw and took a visit inside to see what each shop was like and who might work in the particular shop. The children then used some money to buy some vegetables from the grocers, helping to decide what they wanted, how many they needed and how much it would cost, as well as understanding the process of buying items. It was a lovely trip which extended the children’s knowledge, thinking and understanding. The children have been able to use their new knowledge to role play in their new shop at pre-school.
