Where children have fun, learning

Bee rescue at Pembroke Road

At Pembroke Road today we had to call out Doug from Bristol Bees Association to collect a swarm of honey bees that had set up camp on one of the trees in pre-school garden. He climbed the tree and used his hands to remove parts of the swarm and place them into his specially designed ‘bee box’. After some waiting, all of the bees followed the Queen Bee’s scent and the colony moved from the tree branch into the bee box. The children thought Doug looked like a ghost in his white outfit and laughed at the thought of a ghost climbing a tree! Doug predicts that there were at least 5000 honey bees in the colony and he took them home to join his collection of 7 other colonies that he keeps. The children have been asking lots of questions about honey bees and where they live, which has peaked their interest in habitats of other animals and insects. We will continue to develop this in the setting.
